It has been HOT here in Boonville. Last week it peaked at 110F at the farm multiple days in a row. Luckily, yesterday the high was a mere 90F and today, well, it's going to be hotter than that. But! The chiles are thriving, beans are looking good, and we currently have plenty of water to keep everything irrigated.
With a dream of cooler weather coming that will allow us to use our oven again, we've got a new recipe that features our Sugar Rush Peach chile powder that I can't wait to share with you. And will make you want to purchase a jar if you don't have one yet!
Sugar Rush Peach Chile has an immediate heat which fades quickly into lovely tropical fruit flavors. It hasn't been a chile that I naturally reach for in the kitchen, but I've been using it VERY regularly in this new recipe from Emily Teel.
While “sugar” is in its name, there is no actual sugar added to this chile powder. All that’s in the jar is pure chile powder from oblong peachy-yellow chile pods. These chiles are the result of an accidental hybridization of a Peruvian chile and another unknown chile in a chile breeder’s greenhouse in Wales of all places.
Grandma Teel's Old Fashioned Brown Sugar Sugar Rush Peach Peach Cobbler is ready to be the star dessert the next night the temps dip below 85. With a lot of our recipes, you can really use any chile powder you want, but with this cobbler, I think only the Sugar Rush Peach will work.
Based on Emily's grandmother's easy peach cobbler, it follows classic cobbler recipes from the Great Depression. It isn't a cobbler with biscuits on top, but has a more cake-like base. Grandma Teel loved it because it is an easy formula where the butter melts in the preheating oven and there’s no pastry involved, just a stir-together batter.
Would you believe me if I told you I made this 3 times in one week? Partially to make sure it worked with fresh peach or frozen peaches (it does!), but also because I couldn't stop eating it. I now have a favorite way to use our Sugar Rush Peach chile powder. Don't skimp on the dallop of whipped cream or ice cream when serving!
